Is police film different from detective film?

Neither has en wiki article yet, they just redirect to mystery film for now. I think there is potential to have standalone articles for both. "Mystery" is a weird redirect, I feel like "crime" would be the better one for now. As for comparing the two, detectives can be police or private, so I think there is space for a distinct detective-film article. Wikipedia as a whole is not great with film-genre articles, unfortunately. It involves more book research than individual films. Erik (talk | contrib) ^{(ping me)} 13:31, 8 January 2025 (UTC)[reply]

The more I read into genre studies, the more convoluted terms like "Mystery film" or "Crime film" or "Detective film" or "Police film" become. Even in what one would think would be more discussed general genres (i.e: Thriller film), there is rarely agreed upon definitions of genre, and with that, less history, critical evaluation, etc. And when there is such a thing, its usually focused on the genre in terms that is very anglo-centric, usually referring to only American (more specifically Hollywood) or occasionally British overviews of genre. I've recently tried to flesh out these articles, but even with that, I feel like anyone reading it, would come away disappointed in the vagueness that are such commonly used terms.
